2011 Ford Mustang V6

Consumer Reports is widely respected for bringing reviews of products to the public without bias or favoratism, and as a result their opinions of various products are considered to be the most trustworthy in the industry. The nonprofit magazine recently put the most popular V6 pony cars to the test – the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 and the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V6.

The Mustang came into the long-standing battle much better equipped than the previous year. The new 3.7L powerplant packs one more horsepower than the Camaro – 305 compared to 304, and boasts improvement to its steering and suspension as well. Needless to say, the Mustang trounced the Camaro in nearly every comparison test.

Consumer Reports was quick to praise the Mustang’s new powerplant. “The Ford’s new V6 engine is not only more refined than the Camaro’s, it delivered stronger acceleration and better fuel economy as well.” The Mustang also scored better in the magazine’s handling tests. “Despite being an older design, the Mustang outscored the Camaro with a combination of strong acceleration and agile handling. It was also easier to live with.” They continued to praise Ford’s new pony car, saying that “the Mustang, which has a new gearbox and different steering for 2011, is the most agile and enjoyable car to drive of the two.”

When it came down to recommendations, Consumer Reports felt the results were clear cut. “Only the Ford Mustang is recommended. The Mustang has an excellent reliability record with the old V6; we expect this one to be similar.”

You can read the full comparison test in the October 2010 issue of Consumer Reports Magazine.
