1962 Ford Mustang I Concept

This is it – the Mustang that started it all. Interestingly, the 1962 Mustang I Concept shares little with any of the production Mustangs from 1964 to today. It features a mid-engine layout with an unusual 2.0-liter V4 engine with just 109 horsepower and was constructed with a steel frame and an aluminum body. Even so, you can see the beginnings of the Mustang’s heritage in the running pony emblem that can still be seen on the car today.

Ford brought out one of the two Mustang I prototypes to the Pebble Beach Concours last month, and it fit right in alongside the modern concepts displayed outside the lodge. It’s the first time we’ve seen the car outside the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, so of course we took plenty of pictures. You can see all of them in the gallery below.
