New Product: Western Motorsports air intake for the 2011 Mustang GT
Western Motorsports has always taken a different approach to designing intake systems for the Mustang than most other companies, and their newest intake for the 2011 Mustang uses the same front-mounted design as their system for the 2005-2010 models. The WMS High Velocity Ram Air intake utilizes a 21-inch wide filter placed directly in front of the throttle body as well as a ram air box to seal the intake to the hood to prevent hot air coming in from the engine bay. Two systems are offered including an 87mm system that uses the stock tune as well as a 100mm system that requires a re-tune that is available from both DiabloSport and SCT. You can read full details about the new Western Motorsports intake system for the 2011 Mustang below.
Product Description:
In 2005 we revolutionized the Mustang intake with our front mounted ram air design and we are doing it again for the 2011 Mustang 5.0! At 412hp stock, it’s obvious that the 5.0 breathes well so an intake that flows substantial air is required. Our High Velocity Ram Air intake offers the straightest, coldest and most efficient airflow of any intake on the market. You don’t need to be an engineer to understand this, our front mounted design just makes more sense than a side mount design.
A key element to our intake design is the Ram Air box that seals to the hood so all incoming cold air is forced into the filter. The Ram Air box also keeps any hot engine air away from the filter, remember every 11 drop in air temperature = 1hp. We also took advantage of Fords cold air duct in the 2011 and force this air through 2 ducts in the back of our Ram Air box. More cold air = more power!

Ford left us more room to work under the 'power bulge' hood so we were able to fit a massive 21" wide filter with 476 sq in of filter material. Of course, the filter is washable and reusable.

Now that's straight, smooth airflow! This picture is of our direct replacement 87mm system that does not require a tune, notice how well it transitions into the stock 80mm throttle body. A 100mm intake system is also available that does require a tune.

Ford also helped make our intake easier to install by leaving some extra length in the mass air wiring harness, it's a direct plug in on the 5.0 engine, no wiring required!

The stock Ford coolant tank is moved over to the drivers side corner to make way for our intake. All the brackets, hoses, clamps etc are supplied in the kit and this is an easy bolt-on operation. And yes the sound tube is gone. There is no need for this ugly looking snake once the WMS Ram Air is installed, you hear the sweet sounding 5.0 the old fashioned way, through the intake.

Our 87mm intake system is completely compatible with any performance tunes for the 2011 Mustang GT. The mass air transfer function for our 87mm intake is a duplicate to the stock mass air transfer function so no compensation is needed for this. Simply load the standard performance tunes from SCT, Diablo and others. Our 100mm intake system does require a custom tune and these will be available for both Diablo and SCT.

Here is a preliminary dyno sheet with a prototype 87mm intake without any tuning and 91 octane, gains of roughly 12hp demonstrate that our basic design works very well. Production parts should make a little more power and we will dyno again once they are ready. Of course dyno results don't show any gains from the ram air design of our intake so expect further gains on the road at speed.
