A tour of Classic Recreations, home of the Shelby GT500CR

At SEMA last year Classic Recreations of Yukon, Oklahoma announced a partnership with Shelby to produce a continuation version of the legendary car. The GT500CR, while taking inspiration from the original, is actually a vastly superior car featuring modern suspension and braking systems as well as a start-of-the-art 427ci V8 producing 545 horsepower in base trim. Each GT500CR takes an amazing 2,500 man hours to build, and every car is assembled with a close attention to detail.

Since then we’ve seen a couple different versions of the car including the prototype and one in Candy Apple Red. However, we wanted to get a look at the GT500CR in person so we headed out to Oklahoma to visit Classic Recreations for ourselves. Owner Jason Engel gave us a personal tour of the facility, and you can follow along with the assembly of a GT500CR below.

Original 1967 Mustang Fastbacks are used as the base for the GT500CR. The cars come in various conditions, so each is completely torn down, inspected, and then brought up and restored to Classic Recreations' standards. Any imperfections are completely removed and each car is then prepped for painting.

Some of the cars need more work than others. The bodies are also modified with genuine Shelby fiberglass enhancements like the new front fascia and the side scoops.

Once fully prepped the cars move over to the paint building. Classic Recreations paints all of the cars in their own facility to ensure a high level of quality for every vehicle they build.

This particular car has just come out of the paint booth. There are several standard colors offered, but customers can request any combination of custom colors.

Once painted the cars move over to the assembly building. Classic Recreations has three lifts, so multiple cars can be assembled at any time.

Each of the cars is fitted with a multitude of genuine Shelby parts from the Carroll Shelby signature gauges to the Shelby/Baer brakes. The modern components like the coilover suspension system make the GT500CR handle much better than the original.

Each of the cars takes approximately 2,500 man hours to build. Once completed, each car is fully inspected and then sent out to its lucky new owner!

Here a fully completed Shelby GT500CR is contrasted by a 1967 Mustang Fastback waiting for its conversion.
