Video: Motor Trend pits the 2011 Shelby GT500 against the Corvette Z06, Nissan GT-R
Motor Trend seems to love the Mustang, as it has done comparison tests with various models several times in the past year. The latest is a five-figure shootout, matching the 2011 Shelby GT500 with the Corvette Z06 and Nissan GT-R as the available supercars under $100,000. Of course, this isn’t quite an apples-to-apples comparison when the price tags are considered – the GT500 is $42,680 cheaper than the Corvette and $35,620 less than the GT-R – so the fact that the GT500 is outperformed by its counterparts is expected.
Still, the GT500 manages to hold its own with some pretty impressive numbers. Motor Trend hit 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, knocked out the 1/4 mile in 12.4 seconds at 115.8 mph, braked from 60-0 mph in 104 feet, and reached 1.01g on the skidpad. Pro driver Randy Pobst described the GT500 as a “very well-behaved, well-mannered car. I could drive it real aggressively, because I had a lot of confidence. Good balance through the corners.”
In the end Motor Trend put the GT500 in 3rd place, one of the few times a Mustang has lost a competition in the past year. They concluded by saying, “At just over $55,000, an unbeatable supercar. At under six figures, there are two better.”
