Ford Mustang sales down slightly in April, still up overall for 2014

2013 Ford Mustang GT

Ford sold a total of 7,243 Mustangs in the month of April, down 6.6 percent compared to the same month last year. While that may seem like bad news, Mustang sales are still doing very well for 2014. This was the first month that hasn’t beaten last year’s numbers, and sales through the first third of the year have outpaced 2013 by 7.1 percent (26,839 compared to 25,071).

The Mustang is also doing significantly better than most of the Ford lineup. It’s the only car to have improved sales in 2014, which are down 9.5 percent overall. The only other real bright spots for Ford this year are the F-Series (up 3.9 percent in 2014) and the Expedition (up 16.2 percent).

While Mustang sales have surpassed our expectations this year, it will be interesting to see what happens in the final months before the 2015 Mustang goes on sale in the fall. Will sales increase as Ford and its dealers provide incentives to move 2014s, or will buyers wait out for the newer model?
